Published in two volumes, in 1885 and 1886, the Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, were the then long awaited memoirs of the most famous General of the Civil War. They were completed shortly before his death in 1885, and were an unqualified success.
General Grant was reluctant to publish his memoirs, and vowed never to do so; however, he was persuaded by circumstances to eventually write these two volumes. He wrote these volumes in a fairly short period, while battling cancer, which eventually took his life.
This ebook includes original text, photographs, and maps, plus additional civil war photographs. Maps/photographs are included along with the associated text, and also as slide shows. (See our

Commentary:
I'm not a great fan of memoirs; they are often become ego-boosting forums for the writer. In fairness, any autobiography must include some self-back-patting; and that is fine, as long as it is not over-done.
The memoir of U.S. Grant is anything but an exercise in egoism. It is quite the opposite; General Grant tried hard to avoid such an indulgence. Even at times when I think he should have tooted his own horn, he still down-played his role.
My own impression of U.S. Grant is that he was honest beyond reproach; the type of person who took action, and got things done; and made it look easy. He a was human; he made great decisions, which he down-played, and great mistakes, which he did readily admit. You get the impression that it was all kind of matter-of-fact to him. Where others might tout an action as masterful, or brilliant, he would probably see it as simply the most correct, or most logical action to take.
This is a 'must read'.
